Summary
The M6 G/GNR is an anti-vehicle directed-energy weapon issued to UNSC forces late in the Human-Covenant War. It is colloquially known as the “Spartan Laser” due to its origins as a supplementary component of the SPARTAN-II program. Ruinously expensive at the time of its introduction, later refinements reduced the cost to merely extraordinarily expensive, though only ODSTs and Spartans could be said to have ready access to the weapon until the post-War period.
Design
The M6 is a solid-state laser which produces a powerful microsecond-long pulse of energy capable of burning through thick plates of metallic laminates, nanocomposites, or hardened steel. The casing holds a high-capacity battery cell that feeds into a pulsed-power array and crystal slabs that produce the weapon’s devastating beam. Heat management forces significant downtime between shots, and the limited discharge speed of the batteries means that it takes three to four seconds to bring the pulsed-power bank to maximum charge and release. Approximately a quarter of the battery charge is consumed each shot.
Variants
The M6 has gone through several iterations, but its changes have been mostly cosmetic. Internal components have changed over time, incorporating incremental advances that have lowered production costs, and increased efficiency, but the significant advances in crystal doping and optoelectronic focusing remain largely opaque to end users.
